Can You Drive a Golf Cart on Public Roads?

In principle, yes – but not straight from the factory. A standard golf cart is designed for private grounds and the golf course. For use on public roads, the vehicle must be technically upgraded and registered. In the EU, street-legal golf carts usually fall into the class of light four-wheeled motor vehicles, in practice mostly with a design speed of up to 45 km/h.

What Equipment Is Required?

For registration, the cart is equipped with, among other things:

  • Lighting: headlights, indicators, brake and rear lights, reflectors
  • Exterior mirrors and horn
  • Seat belts on all seats
  • Licence plate holder with illumination
  • depending on class: speedometer and further certifications

Add to that the individual approval or type certification, a licence plate and liability insurance. The details differ between Austria and Germany and by vehicle class – we know both procedures and guide you through the entire process.

Which Driving Licence Do You Need?

For light four-wheeled vehicles up to 45 km/h, licence class AM is generally sufficient (included in class B in Austria and Germany). More powerful versions require class B. The vehicle's specific registration class is always decisive.

Who Benefits from a Street-Legal Golf Cart?

  • Golf facilities whose courses are connected by public roads
  • Hotels and resorts with transfers via public roads
  • Municipalities, businesses and event organisers moving between sites
  • Private users, for example in holiday villages
